on 20 March 1966  Alka Yagnik was born in Gujarati Hindu family in Kolkata. Her mother’s name is  Shubha Yagnik who was a Indian classical music singer. Alka completed her schooling from Modern High School. At the age of six in 1972 she started singing for Akashvani (All India Radio), Calcutta. In 1976 At the age of 10, She gone to Mumbai as a child singer with her mother. After hearing her voice Raj Kapoor sent Alka to music director Laxmikant  with a letter. After meeting Alka  Laxmikant gave her two alternatives — an immediate start as a dubbing artist or a later break as a singer.

In 1989 Alka Yagnik got married with  Neeraj Kapoor who is a businessman.

In 1972 At the age of six Alka is classically trained and began singing bhajans for Akashvani (All India Radio), Calcutta. In 1980 She made her singing debut in Bollywood movies with the song “Thirkat Ang” from  the movie “Payal Ki Jhankaar”. After that she sung lots of song for movies like- Ek Ladki Ek Ladki(1981), Mere Angane Mein (1982), Mujhe Pine Ka Shock Nahin(1983), Beeswin Sadi Ke (1984), Dupatta Tumhara (1986), Ek Do Teen (1987), O Re Piya Tum Hi Ko Dil Diya (1988), Raat Ke Bara Baje (1989), O Thanedar Babu (1990), Maine Kab Socha Tha (1991), Tere Mere Payar Mein (1992),  Akkad Bakkad Bombay Bo (1993), Gore Gore Mukhde Pe (1994), Raja ko Rani Se Pyar Ho Gaya (1995), Chaahat Na Hoti (1996) and many more. In 1998 Alka released her first super hit song “Kuch Kuch Hota Hain” from the movie “Kuch Kuch Hota Hain”. For this song she received four awards even still this song is very popular in musical industry. In 2000 She released her second mega hit song “Kaho Na Payar Hain” from the movie “Kaho Na Payar Hain”. For this amazing song she received three awards. It’s a very popular romantic song.

She has sung in many different languages like- Odia, Assamese, Meitei,Urdu-Hindi,  Gujarati, Rajasthani, Bengali,  Avadhi, Bhojpuri, Malayalam,Marathi, Tamil, English,Telugu, and Punjabi.

She has worked with many singers and composers like – Laxmikant–Pyarelal,Anandji, Aadesh Sajid–Wajid,  Ismail Darbar, Sandesh Shandilya Rahul Dev Burman, Rajesh Roshan, , Bappi Lahiri,  Nadeem–Shravan, A. R. Rahman, Jatin–Lalit, Shrivastava, Viju Shah, M. M. Keeravani,  Anu Malik, Anand–Milind, Shankar–Ehsaan–LoyNusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Himesh Reshammiya and many others.
